Car-toppers
Car-toppers are dinghies which are usually made of fiberglass. They are light and easy to transport; being only about 15 feet in length and powered by an outboard engine of 5-15 horsepower, car-toppers can easily accommodate 3 anglers.
They’re most suitable for freshwater fishing for places like lake, dam, river or reservoir. The use for saltwater fishing will be much restricted to inshore places like lagoon or estuary. It's not advisable for use in open sea.
Aluminum Boats
These aluminum fishing boats are safer than the fiberglass car-toppers. Since they are made of aluminum they are robust and therefore much tougher. They are also easier to maintain and have a better life-span than fiberglass.
Some anglers may say that these particular types are too hot to use in summer. Quite true, they can be noisy too. So you will have to be extra careful not to drop anything that could create noise and thus scaring away the fishes.
Runabouts
Like Car-toppers, runabouts are also usually made of fiberglass. But they are bigger and wider and with a length of about 16 to 22 feet, these types have more room-space to move about. It can easily accommodate up to 5 anglers.
Runabouts are more powerful since they are powered by outboard engines of 25 to 150hp. For transportation, they need to be towed on a trailer unless one has a good mooring place. They are suitable for both fresh and saltwater fishing.
Center Console Runabouts
These boats to me are the big brothers of runabouts. They have all the necessary instruments and usually included are global positioning system and depth finder. The cockpit is just like a saloon car with hydraulic steering wheel.
Some may add in a flexible cover which can be rolled to a side when your fishing method is casting with artificial lures.
With length of 22 feet or more and powered with double 150 horsepower engines are very stable and seaworthy enough to head out for open sea
Sport Fishing Boats
Sport fishing vessels are designed specially for offshore fishing. Most of these vessels are made of fiberglass while some are constructed from wood. Vary in length from 22 feet to 70 feet or more with roomy accommodations, the smallest version of a sport fishing boat can easily accommodate 5 anglers.
Most modern sport fishing boats are packed with features like hydraulic steering, aerated live well, lighted bait well, stainless steel rod holders and a nice shower too.
Charter Boats
Designed strictly for inshore and offshore fishing, these boats can accommodate 8-15 anglers in according to the length of the boat. The length can be from 45-100 feet. Some are big wooden boats and powered by diesel engines.
Fishing equipments and accessories are provided by some of these charters too with a small rental fee. Bait and ice for your catch are usually a standard practice taken care of by them. Food and beverages must be negotiated during booking of boat.
Party Boats
These particular types are like the mothers of all fishing boats. They are large offshore vessels specially designed, targeting big game fishes like tuna, shark, sail, marlin or giant trevally. The duration of a trip may last a day or several days. It's all depending on the targeted fish and the amount negotiated.
The length of a party boat can be as long as 120 feet or even more. A good party boat should have all the necessary facilities and amenities that anglers' need for a good and comfortable fishing trip.
Most of the skippers and deckhands of these fishing boats are very experienced fishermen themselves. Their knowledge of the sea and fishing are doubtlessly very high too. Pay attention to their instructions and valuable fishing tips
